Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has given his verdict on Chelsea’s current form, offering praise for Marc Cucurella while casting doubt on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s capabilities as the club’s No. 1.

Cucurella’s Redemption Arc

Chelsea splashed £60 million to secure Marc Cucurella from Brighton in 2022, a move that raised eyebrows at the time.

Many questioned the decision, especially given Ben Chilwell’s presence as Chelsea’s starting left-back.

However, Chilwell’s injury struggles have given Cucurella an extended run in the team, and the Spanish defender has made the most of it.

Featuring in 12 of Chelsea’s 13 Premier League games this season, Cucurella’s performances have caught the attention of critics, including Deeney.

“He has surprised me. I didn’t think he was going to be that good. I also thought: Why did Chelsea buy him when they had Ben Chilwell? But clearly, they knew better,” Deeney admitted.

Sanchez’s Struggles

Despite Chelsea’s strong form, Deeney remains unconvinced about Robert Sanchez. While the Spanish goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, Deeney believes Sanchez is a weak link in Chelsea’s push for a top-four finish.

“I’ve criticized Sanchez on multiple platforms. I think he’s the reason Chelsea could miss out on the top four. But credit where it’s due – he did get a clean sheet against Villa,” Deeney said.

Enzo Fernandez’s Resurgence

Deeney also highlighted the improving form of midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who endured a slow start to his Chelsea career following a £107 million move from Benfica.

Fernandez has now contributed to seven goals in his last four matches.

“After a tough summer, he’s starting to come out the other side. Taking the armband off him seems to have relaxed him, and we’re seeing him develop with the team,” Deeney noted.

Chelsea’s Current Standing

Chelsea currently sit third in the Premier League table, tied on points with second-placed Arsenal. Their next challenge is an away fixture against Southampton on Wednesday, where they’ll aim to continue their strong run of form.

Will Chelsea address their perceived vulnerabilities to solidify their position in the league, or will these concerns come back to haunt them in the race for the top four? Only time will tell.
