Sterling, once a key figure at Manchester City, moved to Chelsea two years ago but has struggled since then.
His time at Chelsea ended with Enzo Maresca labeling him surplus to requirements, leading to a loan move to Arsenal in search of a fresh start. However, things haven’t improved as expected.
Sterling has played a minor role at Arsenal this season, starting just one Premier League match, and is now behind the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard in Mikel Arteta’s selection.
Petit’s Critique of Sterling’s Attitude
Petit is concerned that Sterling’s lack of ambition is affecting his performances on the pitch. In a recent interview with Gambling Zone, Petit questioned what Sterling now offers beyond his pace.
He suggested that Sterling might feel he has already achieved all he needs in his career, leading to a loss of drive. Petit emphasized that top-level football requires constant hunger and ambition, and if Sterling is no longer motivated, it could explain his underwhelming performances.
Petit also predicted that Chelsea would look to offload Sterling in the upcoming summer transfer window, but his high wages may be a barrier unless he’s willing to take a pay cut.
Arteta’s Response to Sterling’s Situation
Despite Petit’s concerns, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed understanding of Sterling’s situation. Arteta, who previously worked with Sterling at Manchester City, acknowledged the winger’s commitment to the team and his efforts in training.
Arteta revealed that Sterling’s application has been exceptional, and he is actively working to increase his minutes on the pitch.
The Arsenal manager stressed that he intends to give Sterling more opportunities to impact the team in the coming weeks, with hopes that more game time will help him regain his form.
However, Arteta’s words highlight the ongoing struggle to find a place for Sterling in a crowded squad.
