Despite being a regular starter for much of the campaign, Madueke was dropped in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, only to return with a goal and assist in the Blues’ dominant 5-1 win against Southampton.
Maresca clarified that the decision to bench Madueke stemmed from dissatisfaction with his training intensity, a stance he reiterated at Friday’s press conference.
The Chelsea manager emphasized that his comments are intended to motivate Madueke, highlighting that any lapse in effort is unacceptable if the winger aims to maintain his current form.
Setting High Standards for Madueke
Madueke has been a key figure in Chelsea’s attacking lineup, starting 12 out of 14 league matches this season. However, Maresca has made it clear that his performances in training must match his on-field contributions.
“Overall, Noni is working well since the start, but sometimes he drops a little,” Maresca explained. “He is not allowed to drop. His numbers have been fantastic, and defensively he’s pressing and contributing as we ask. But the reason I addressed his training is because I want the best for him. The moment he relaxes, it is wrong.”
The Italian tactician also noted the importance of balancing a close relationship with players while holding them accountable, saying, “When you’re close to someone, sometimes you have to say things they don’t like because it’s for their own good. Noni needs to understand this comes from a place of care and ambition for him.”
Chelsea’s Strong League Position
Chelsea currently sit second in the Premier League, level on points with Arsenal and seven points behind leaders Liverpool.
As the Blues prepare for a crucial clash against Tottenham, Maresca’s words reflect his determination to keep his squad motivated and performing at the highest level.
With Madueke back in the starting XI and contributing effectively, Chelsea fans will hope to see their young star maintain his consistency as they continue their title pursuit
