The Hale End Academy graduate, who was pivotal in Arsenal’s resurgence under Arteta, departed last summer seeking more consistent playing time.

Arteta acknowledged the significant role Smith Rowe played in rejuvenating Arsenal during a challenging period, noting his vital contributions alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Despite his talent, injuries and the emergence of Martin Odegaard limited Smith Rowe’s opportunities, prompting his move to Fulham.

Arteta Reflects on Smith Rowe’s Departure

“It was a very tough decision to let Emile go,” Arteta said. “I feel really grateful for what he did for the club and for me during a critical time. He was instrumental in changing things around.”

Arteta added that the move was necessary for Smith Rowe’s development, saying, “Players have to play. He faced a lot of struggles with injuries and needed a fresh start. We understood that and supported his decision.”

Ironically, Odegaard’s recent injury would have provided Smith Rowe with the opportunities he sought at Arsenal. However, Arteta remains confident in his decision, citing the emergence of 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri as a key factor.

Focus on Ethan Nwaneri

Arteta highlighted the progress of Nwaneri, who has impressed since stepping up to the first team. “We wanted to create room for Ethan, and he has given us every reason to trust him. It’s great to see his development and the promise he shows for the future.”

As Arsenal prepare to face Fulham, Smith Rowe’s form and contributions for his new club serve as a reminder of the midfielder’s potential and the difficult choices managers must make for their squads.
