Ange Postecoglou broke from his usual managerial diplomacy by publicly criticizing Timo Werner’s subpar performance in Tottenham’s draw against Rangers.

The German international, often a polarizing figure among Spurs fans, was substituted at halftime for Dejan Kulusevski, whose second-half goal salvaged the team’s hopes of automatic qualification.

Postecoglou’s remarks after the match turned heads as he openly chastised Werner. “Timo’s first-half performance was not acceptable to me,” he declared.

“He’s a German international, and I need everyone giving their best. This wasn’t an example of that. I expect far more from senior players.”

This public critique marked a departure from Postecoglou’s usual approach, especially since he had recently avoided directly criticizing Cristian Romero.

Following Romero’s controversial social media comments blaming club chairman Daniel Levy for Spurs’ struggles, Postecoglou opted for a more understanding stance.

“He was emotional,” Postecoglou explained about Romero. “He hasn’t been able to help us on the pitch, and that was his way of showing support.

While some of his comments had merit, it wasn’t the right way to address the situation. I’ve spoken to him, and he’s apologized.”

Despite his softer handling of Romero, Postecoglou’s blunt remarks about Werner show the Australian manager isn’t afraid to lay down the law when necessary.

With Spurs in a precarious position, his high standards may be what the squad needs to turn their fortunes around.
