The Nigerian international, who made the final shortlist for the prestigious accolade, has enjoyed a remarkable year both at the club and international levels.
At 27, Lookman showcased his prowess during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, contributing three goals and an assist in seven matches for the Super Eagles. He also made headlines with a historic hat-trick for Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final.
This season, the winger has continued his impressive form for the Serie A side, amassing 11 goals and five assists in just 18 appearances across all competitions.
Speaking to Foot Africa, former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr praised Lookman’s evolution, describing him as a complete player.
“He has shown remarkable progress,” Rohr stated. “The struggles of his early career in England and Germany are now behind him.
He has risen from obscurity to become a standout performer. Today, he is as adept at scoring as he is at creating opportunities for others.”
Rohr’s endorsement further bolsters Lookman’s credentials as he eyes the prestigious award, a testament to his transformation into one of Africa’s finest footballers.
