Chelsea’s decision to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United has been described as the “best transfer deal ever” after the winger’s recent resurgence under new boss Enzo Maresca.

Sancho’s Stamford Bridge revival comes after his struggles at Old Trafford, where his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund failed to meet expectations. A rocky relationship with former United manager Erik ten Hag only added to his woes.

However, Sancho’s return to form on loan at Dortmund last season, culminating in a Champions League final appearance, sparked fresh interest from Chelsea.

The west London club secured Sancho on a season-long loan, with an obligation to make the move permanent for a fee between £20m and £25m next summer—a fraction of his original price tag.

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes the deal could be a masterstroke. Speaking to Betfred, Johnson said, “Jadon Sancho’s move looks completely one-sided. £23m for a player of his talent is like giving him away.”

Sancho has already started to repay Chelsea’s faith, scoring a stunning goal in the thrilling comeback win against Tottenham and impressing again in their recent victory over Brentford.

Under Maresca’s leadership, Sancho has flourished, helping Chelsea emerge as surprise contenders in the Premier League title race.

“Sancho looks like he’s enjoying himself again, and that’s why he’s performing,” Johnson continued. “The manager and backroom staff deserve huge credit for that. When good players pull together and raise their game, it’s a gamechanger.”

Johnson also praised Chelsea’s rising star Cole Palmer and midfield anchor Enzo Fernandez, who are both playing pivotal roles in the team’s success.

“Fernandez looks like the player Chelsea paid for—he’s scoring goals, controlling games, and leading the team as captain,” Johnson noted.

However, Johnson highlighted Chelsea’s defence as their potential Achilles’ heel in the title race.

Reflecting on their dramatic win against Tottenham, Johnson warned: “The top sides won’t let you score four goals after going 2-0 down. Defensive mistakes could cost Chelsea the title.”

Despite concerns, Chelsea’s gamble on Sancho appears to be paying off, with the winger rediscovering his form and proving to be a key asset in their bid for silverware.
