Lookman was the star of the show at the 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech, where Africa’s finest footballers were celebrated.
The Atalanta forward earned the continent’s top individual honor following a stellar year for both club and country, succeeding compatriot Victor Osimhen, who claimed the prize in 2023.
Speaking with softfootball.com, Onigbinde expressed pride in Lookman’s accomplishment, emphasizing that his victory was well-deserved.
“As a Nigerian, I am proud of Ademola Lookman’s achievement because winning the African Player of the Year is not an easy feat,” Onigbinde said.
“He truly deserved the award based on what he has done for the Super Eagles and Atalanta as well. There was no controversy to it—he won on merit.”
Lookman’s incredible 12 months included standout performances for Nigeria, where he played a key role in their run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, as well as his exploits with Atalanta in Serie A and the Europa League.
Onigbinde also urged Lookman to maintain his impressive form and continue excelling for both his club and the Super Eagles.
“I hope he builds on this and continues to bang in the goals in Europe and for Nigeria,” he added.
The victory solidifies Lookman’s status as one of Africa’s brightest stars, and with accolades like these, the future looks bright for the talented winger.
