While Sanchez initially established himself as Chelsea’s first choice last season, seeing off competition from Dorde Petrovic—who was loaned out to Strasbourg—his position now appears precarious.

Despite a £20 million signing of Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen, Sanchez has started all but one Premier League match this season.

However, his tenure has been marred by several costly errors, prompting the Blues to consider alternatives.

According to German outlet BILD, Chelsea have expressed interest in Kobel, whose future at Dortmund looks uncertain.

The Swiss goalkeeper signed a contract extension with the German club last year, committing until 2028.

However, Dortmund’s failure to qualify for the Champions League this season and their ongoing trophy drought have reportedly left the 27-year-old frustrated.

Chelsea might need to shell out between €70m-80m (£58-66m) to secure Kobel’s signature.

The towering 6 ft 5 in goalkeeper has been a standout performer since joining Dortmund from Stuttgart in 2021, amassing 136 appearances and twice earning a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.

He recently became Switzerland’s No.1 following Yann Sommer’s international retirement.

Criticism of Sanchez has grown, with pundits like Jamie Carragher voicing concerns over his capability to anchor a title-winning team.

On The Overlap, Carragher pointed out how integral a world-class goalkeeper is for success, citing Liverpool’s transformation after signing Alisson.

Chelsea’s strong start under Enzo Maresca has reignited their ambitions, but securing a reliable presence between the posts could be the key to achieving their goals.

Kobel’s potential arrival may be the upgrade they need to take the next step.
