Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, is eager to revamp the squad during the January transfer window.

While the Red Devils were eyeing a new striker and left-back options, including Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, they’ve now locked in Leon, a 17-year-old talent from Cerro Porteno.

The deal, set to officially take effect in July 2025, reportedly involves an initial $4 million (£3m) fee, with potential add-ons totaling another $4 million (£3m).

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, explaining that Leon will join Manchester United once he turns 18 in April, similar to Chelsea’s recent deal for Estevao Willian.

The move was orchestrated by United’s technical director, Jason Wilcox.

Leon made his senior debut for Cerro Porteno in August, scoring the winning goal in his first appearance. Since then, he has solidified his position as the team’s first-choice left-back, making 19 league appearances this season.

In a recent interview with Deportes Uno, Leon shared his aspirations for the future. “I have huge expectations about playing in the 2025 Copa Libertadores,” he said.

“I’ve heard about Manchester United’s interest, but everything is handled by my agent. I’ve spent four years preparing for this opportunity and must make the most of it.”

The young defender plans to remain focused on his current team as they compete in the Copa Libertadores, which begins in February, before making his highly anticipated move to Old Trafford.
