The Atalanta star clinched the prestigious title last week in Marrakesh, Morocco, defeating top players like PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy.
Speaking to Soccer TV via The Sun, Okocha explained that the CAF award recognizes more than just on-field performances.
“The CAF Award isn’t solely about your skills on the pitch,” said the former Super Eagles captain. “It evaluates your attitude, how you interact with teammates, and your response to coaches—these are all critical factors before tactics even come into play.”
He emphasized that Lookman’s triumph reflects his excellence across these areas. “For Ademola Lookman to receive this award, it shows he has excelled in every criterion. Dedication and understanding your craft set you apart.”
Okocha praised Lookman’s impact, calling him a source of pride for the African continent. “Millions of fans celebrate each time you showcase your God-given talents in Europe. The day you were crowned King of African Football was a joyful moment for all of us.”
Reflecting on his personal experience as a two-time winner in 1996 and 1999, Okocha shared the significance of the achievement.
“Winning this prestigious award is not just a personal victory; it’s an inspiration for the entire continent and a message to young players: challenges can be overcome with hard work and commitment.”
He concluded by expressing his confidence in Africa’s potential: “Ademola Lookman’s success proves that we can achieve greatness. His story will inspire the next generation to strive for more.”
