Chelsea defender Renato Veiga is reportedly on the brink of joining Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old Portuguese international, who arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer in a £12 million deal from Basel, has struggled to establish himself in Enzo Maresca’s team.
This season, Veiga has featured sparingly, logging just 177 minutes in the Premier League and playing most of his games in the Conference League.
Despite starting at left-back in Chelsea’s commanding 5-0 FA Cup win over Morecambe last weekend, his future at the club seems uncertain.
According to Sky Germany, Veiga has agreed on personal terms with Dortmund. However, the Bundesliga side is still negotiating with Chelsea to finalize a deal, reportedly aiming for a loan agreement with an option to purchase.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken positively about Veiga’s contributions and versatility. Earlier this season, Maresca highlighted how Veiga had adapted to playing in various roles, including centre-back, full-back, holding midfielder, and attacking midfielder.
“Players like Veiga, who can play multiple positions, are a huge asset to the team. In today’s game, it’s essential to be versatile,” Maresca said.
Despite Maresca’s praise, Veiga’s limited opportunities this season have fueled speculation about his departure. A move to Dortmund could offer him the regular playing time he needs and a fresh start in the Bundesliga.
