Jamie Carragher has issued a stark warning to Liverpool’s management, urging them to sign a defender in the January transfer window to maintain their Premier League title bid.
Liverpool’s recent 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground highlighted defensive frailties. The Reds fell behind to a Chris Wood strike but managed to salvage a point thanks to substitute Diogo Jota’s equalizer.
Despite dominating chances, Forest’s defense and goalkeeper Matz Sels frustrated Liverpool’s attempts to claim all three points.
While Liverpool remains six points clear at the top of the table, Carragher expressed concern over the team’s defensive vulnerability.
He noted that the once formidable backline now appears fragile, with no immediate solutions from within Arne Slot’s squad.
“Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win,” Carragher stated on X. “But the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!”
Slot fielded his first-choice back four against Forest, including Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in central defense, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson as full-backs.
However, substitutions on the hour mark saw Robertson and Konate replaced, a move that directly led to Forest’s equalizer when Kostas Tsimikas provided the assist for Jota’s header.
Carragher has previously identified left-back as a position needing urgent reinforcement. While he respects Robertson as a club legend, he believes the Scotsman is past his prime and Kostas Tsimikas is not an adequate replacement.
Speaking on Sky Sports earlier this month, Carragher emphasized: “Liverpool need to sign a full-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold had a poor game, and though Conor Bradley has potential, Robertson seems to be struggling. If Liverpool can bring in a left-back this January, it could solidify their chances of winning the league.”
With the transfer window open, Liverpool’s title hopes may hinge on addressing these defensive concerns.
