Manchester United are revisiting their pursuit of Parma’s rising star Zion Suzuki, 18 months after missing out on the goalkeeper.

Back in 2023, United had almost sealed a deal for Suzuki, then with Urawa Red Diamonds, but the transfer fell through when Andre Onana joined from Inter Milan. Suzuki, wary of limited opportunities, opted for a move to Belgian club Sint-Truidense VV instead.

Speaking to Japanese Soccer Digest Web at the time, Suzuki shared, “My dream is to play in the Premier League. United’s signing of Onana meant I wouldn’t get regular minutes, so I chose Belgium to progress step by step. Even though I can’t join United now, I hope to get there in the future.”

After 32 appearances in Belgium, Suzuki moved to Parma last summer in an £8.5m deal, signing a five-year contract. His standout performances in Serie A have caught United’s attention again, according to talkSPORT.

The Red Devils, along with other top European clubs, are monitoring the 22-year-old, with a potential £40m bid possibly tempting Parma to sell.

Suzuki, capped 16 times for Japan, remains under contract at Parma until 2029. Despite Onana establishing himself as United’s first-choice goalkeeper, his inconsistent form and errors have sparked discussions about strengthening the squad.

Altay Bayindir, United’s backup keeper, recently impressed in the FA Cup against Arsenal, saving a penalty and starring in the shootout. “Life as a footballer is full of cycles,” said coach Amorim. “Altay went from criticism to hero in just weeks. Playing for United is always a joy, whether it’s one game or 90.”

Suzuki’s talent and Premier League aspirations make him an intriguing option for United as they consider their next move.
