Erling Haaland is facing backlash after opting to avoid media interactions following Norway’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in a Nations League clash. The Manchester City striker, who wore the captain’s armband in the absence of Martin Ødegaard, appeared visibly frustrated during the match and chose to skip post-game interviews, leaving reporters without insights from the team’s leader.

The match saw Austria take an early lead through captain Marko Arnautovic, before Alexander Sørloth equalized for Norway. However, Austria regained control with Arnautovic converting a penalty in the second half, followed by goals from Philipp Lienhart, Stefan Posch, and Michael Gregoritsch, leading to a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

Norway’s disappointing performance allowed Austria to equalize their points tally at the top of Group B3, with both teams now on seven points after four matches.

Pundit Kristoffer Lokberg expressed disappointment at Haaland’s decision to shun the media, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with the captaincy. “It’s a shame. If there is anyone we want to hear from after a violent slump, it’s the captain,” he stated. “When you are captain, you have been assigned a role that requires a little extra. You should stand up.” While Lokberg acknowledged the pressures Haaland faces, he insisted that the national team captain should engage with the media.

In the aftermath, Haaland took to Instagram to express remorse for the team’s performance, stating, “Sorry everyone, this was far too bad on my part. In November, we go for six points.”

Norway will look to bounce back in their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Slovenia on October 14 and Kazakhstan three days later. Meanwhile, Haaland aims to return to winning form in the Premier League as Manchester City prepares to face Wolves at Molineux this weekend.
