Gary Neville believes Ruben Amorim is taking bold steps to assert his authority at Manchester United, potentially leading to the departure of high-profile players Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. This mirrors Sir Alex Ferguson’s strategy of making decisive moves to maintain control during his tenure.
Rashford, 27, a long-standing figure at United, has been sidelined for seven consecutive games. Struggling with form and expressing a desire for a “new challenge,” he appears poised to leave. AC Milan is leading the race for a loan deal, with Galatasaray, Borussia Dortmund, Como, and West Ham also showing interest.
Meanwhile, Garnacho, once considered untouchable, faces transfer rumors linking him to Napoli. United reportedly values the 20-year-old Argentine at £70 million.
Speaking on The Overlap US’ It’s Called Soccer podcast, Neville said Amorim’s strategy is about setting standards, even if it means parting ways with fan favorites. He compared Amorim’s potential moves to Ferguson’s controversial decisions to release iconic players like David Beckham and Roy Keane.
Neville noted, “Amorim might feel he has no choice but to target big names like Rashford and Garnacho to enforce a cultural shift at the club.” He suggested that without such bold actions, Amorim risks the fate of predecessors like Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick, and Jose Mourinho.
Neville acknowledged recent improvements in player commitment but cautioned against premature optimism about Amorim’s approach. “The team looks more consistent and settled, but it’s still early days,” he added.
As Amorim navigates a transformative January transfer window, Manchester United fans may witness a mini-clearout, marking the dawn of a new era at Old Trafford.
