Premier League legend Alan Shearer has praised Scott McTominay for his decision to leave Manchester United, calling it a ‘wise decision.’
McTominay had been with United since joining their academy at age five and went on to make 255 appearances for the club. He was a key figure in recent seasons, helping United win the FA Cup and EFL Cup. However, last summer, the club put him up for sale, and McTominay eventually joined Napoli in a £25m move, despite interest from Premier League clubs West Ham and Fulham.
The 27-year-old has made a strong start in Naples, scoring two goals in five games and helping Napoli reach the top of Serie A. Shearer believes this move was clearly the right choice, especially given Manchester United’s struggles this season.
“Moving countries and experiencing something different, both on and off the pitch, was a wise decision for McTominay,” Shearer told Betfair. “Looking at Manchester United’s current form, he’ll feel he made the right choice.”
McTominay is thriving in Italy, building chemistry with teammate Romelu Lukaku, while his former club sits 14th in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, faces increasing scrutiny. Former United boss David Moyes defended him, saying he is “doing a brilliant job” despite the immense pressure. Moyes added, “It’s a tough job, and Ten Hag deserves credit for how well he’s handled it.”
Manchester United returns to Premier League action against Brentford, while McTominay’s Napoli faces Empoli next.
