Manchester United are actively pursuing a deal for Lecce’s talented young left-back, Patrick Dorgu, as the January transfer window nears its close.

The Premier League giants are determined to boost their squad after a challenging season under new manager Ruben Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November.

While United have been linked to high-profile forwards like Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani—who now seems Juventus-bound—the club is also prioritizing defensive reinforcements.

The left-back position has been a pressing concern due to Luke Shaw’s recurring injury issues.

The club has reportedly shortlisted three potential targets for the position: Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, PSG’s Nuno Mendes, and Lecce’s Dorgu. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, talks between United and Lecce over a move for the 20-year-old Denmark defender are already underway, though no agreement has been finalized.

Dorgu has gained attention as one of Serie A’s brightest young talents since making his first-team debut in 2023. Valued at £25 million and contracted to Lecce until 2028, the defender has impressed this season with three goals and an assist in Serie A, despite his team sitting in 16th place. His performances have also attracted interest from Napoli.

Lecce’s sporting director, Pantaleo Corvino, has praised Dorgu’s potential, describing him as a “champion” with unmatched physical abilities and a bright future. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Corvino reaffirmed Lecce’s intent to keep Dorgu until at least the summer, despite the growing interest.

With the second half of the season underway, Amorim is urging Manchester United to back him in the transfer market. The club hopes to strengthen its squad to recover from a rocky start and push for a stronger finish. Whether Dorgu will join United this January remains uncertain, but the discussions are ongoing.
