Ruben Amorim has spoken out about his conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson before Manchester United’s humbling 3-1 defeat to Brighton.
While optimism had surrounded the team earlier in the year, Sunday’s performance at Old Trafford proved that United still have significant work to do, as they were thoroughly outplayed by the Seagulls.
During his post-match press conference, Amorim made a shocking admission, stating, “We might be the worst team in Manchester United history. In the last 10 Premier League games, we’ve won only two.
What does this mean for United fans? And for me personally, it’s tough. We brought in a new coach, but we’re losing more than under the previous one. I’m fully aware of that.”
Since stepping in for Erik ten Hag, Amorim has only secured five wins in his first 15 matches, with seven losses, leaving United in 13th place in the Premier League.
Before kick-off, an emotional tribute was held for club legend Denis Law, who passed away at 84.
Ferguson laid a wreath in Law’s honor at Old Trafford, but before heading to his seat, he shared a brief moment with Amorim. The Portuguese manager later revealed part of what Ferguson said to him: “Keep positive.”
Despite the encouragement, Amorim seemed unable to find solace after the game, expressing his frustration with the poor performance but avoiding pointing fingers at individual players.
United’s next opportunity to turn things around will be Thursday, when they face Rangers in the Europa League, followed by a Premier League match against Fulham on Sunday.
Ferguson also had a chat with Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, who shared that Ferguson asked him to look after Danny Welbeck, one of his former players. Hurzeler described Ferguson as “one of the best coaches ever.”
