Rio Ferdinand has called on Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to make decisive changes before the January transfer window closes, urging the departure of three key players to revitalize the struggling squad.
Amid a slow start to the winter transfer window, clubs are ramping up activities ahead of the February 3 deadline. Manchester United, in particular, are seeking reinforcements, with a new left-back and striker on their wishlist.
Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury woes have highlighted the need for defensive additions, while the club is exploring attacking options if a suitable deal arises.
Since taking over in November, Amorim has acknowledged the difficulty of reviving the team, but the challenges appear greater than he initially anticipated.
With just two wins in their last nine Premier League games, Manchester United are stuck in the bottom half of the table, closer to relegation than to Champions League qualification.
Ferdinand believes the squad would benefit from a clear-out, specifically naming Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia as players who should move on. Rashford has expressed his readiness for a new challenge, attracting interest from domestic and international clubs.
Antony, after a disappointing stint at Old Trafford, is reportedly on the verge of joining La Liga side Real Betis. Malacia is also expected to depart, with United pursuing Patrick Dorgu from Lecce as his replacement.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said, “Antony is likely heading to Real Betis. If these players want to leave, let them go. Unsettled players create bad energy in the dressing room, and that spreads quickly, especially when the team isn’t performing. It’s time to start fresh.”
The festive period was particularly challenging for United, as they endured four defeats in just 12 days. However, the start of 2025 has brought mixed results.
A draw against Liverpool and an FA Cup victory over Arsenal provided some hope, but inconsistency remains an issue. United narrowly overcame Southampton with three late goals but were soundly beaten 3-1 by Brighton.
Following the Brighton defeat, Amorim made a damning statement, describing this United squad as “maybe the worst” in the club’s 147-year history.
Leon Osman, a former Everton midfielder, responded to the comments, saying, “That’s a bold claim, but it could be what the team needs to hear. No player wants to be known as part of the worst team ever.”
Manchester United will next face Europa League rivals Rangers on Thursday night. Just one point separates the two sides in the group stage, making the clash critical for both teams’ progression.
Meanwhile, Rangers, trailing Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership, will also be looking to prove their mettle in Europe.
