Abdukodir Khusanov, the Premier League’s first-ever Uzbek player, has completed his £33.6m transfer to Manchester City on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
The 20-year-old defender arrives after a standout season with Ligue 1’s Lens, making 16 appearances. His move to City comes after Manchester United scouted him during the 2023 U20 World Cup.
United’s interest in Khusanov grew when scout Nicolas Chenalli visited Argentina and witnessed his performances for Uzbekistan. However, United manager Erik ten Hag decided against pursuing the deal, believing the young defender wasn’t yet ready for Premier League football.
Khusanov’s agent, Gairat Khasbiullin, explained that despite Manchester United being the first club to express interest, Ten Hag was unconvinced by his readiness. “The scout made a report, but Ten Hag wasn’t sure he could contribute to the team at that time,” Khasbiullin shared.
Despite Ten Hag’s sacking in November, Manchester United continues to struggle under new manager Ruben Amorim. The move to Manchester City, however, presents a new chapter for Khusanov.
Khusanov expressed his excitement upon joining the Premier League champions, saying, “I’m thrilled to be part of such a great club with the best players in the world. I can’t wait to learn from Pep Guardiola and improve my game.”
City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, praised the defender’s attributes, highlighting his intelligence, strength, and speed. Begiristain believes that working with Guardiola will help Khusanov develop into a key player.
This signing is part of a broader effort by City to rebuild following a disappointing season. In January, they also brought in Claudio Echeverri, Vitor Reis, and Omar Marmoush.
With a string of losses in the Premier League and Champions League, City’s rebuild is focused on regaining their status among Europe’s elite.
