United Set to Challenge Chelsea for Tel’s Signature

Manchester United are weighing up a late move for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, potentially derailing Chelsea’s pursuit of the French teenager.

Tel, 19, has reportedly decided to leave Bayern before the January transfer window shuts, frustrated by a lack of playing time.

The Bundesliga champions secured Tel from Rennes in 2022 for £20m, and he quickly established himself as a promising talent. However, after two seasons in Germany, he has seen his opportunities dwindle, starting just twice in the league this campaign.

Chelsea have been tracking Tel for months, engaging in discussions with Bayern early in the transfer window and reopening talks this week.

The Blues are eager to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s attacking options, with Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku linked with exits. Tel could be a direct replacement if either forward departs.

However, Manchester United have now entered the race. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils are monitoring Tel’s situation as they brace for potential departures at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford is open to leaving if the right opportunity arises, while Alejandro Garnacho has been linked with a controversial move to Chelsea.

Rashford has attracted interest from domestic and European clubs, including Barcelona, while Chelsea are reportedly keen on Garnacho. With uncertainty surrounding their attacking lineup, United could see Tel as a long-term investment.

Bayern Munich, though, may not be willing to part ways with the highly-rated youngster. Sporting director Christoph Freund recently emphasized Tel’s importance to the squad, stating that the club still expects him to make his breakthrough in Munich.

As the transfer window enters its final days, Chelsea and Manchester United now find themselves in direct competition for one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.
