Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has strongly backed his £32m signing Mikel Merino, despite recent criticism from Jamie Carragher.

Merino, who joined from Real Sociedad last summer on a four-year deal, has made limited Premier League appearances, starting only a third of the games this season.

Carragher, writing for The Telegraph, questioned the decision to prioritize Merino over another attacker, calling him “not a game-changer.” He also expressed doubts about Merino’s fit within the squad on The Overlap.

However, Arteta remains confident in his choice, praising Merino’s determination and recent performances. The 28-year-old has struggled with injuries but showed strong form when fit.

Arteta acknowledged Merino’s recent setbacks but emphasized the midfielder’s character and commitment, noting that his “rhythm” and “momentum” have improved significantly.

Despite missing Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Wolves, Merino is back to full fitness and available for the upcoming match against Manchester City.

Arsenal’s Champions League campaign concludes against Girona, and Arteta is determined to field a strong team to secure qualification.

He highlighted Girona’s competitive performances against top-tier opposition, underscoring the need for a top-tier display to finish the group stage on a high note.
