William Gallas admits he’s baffled by Arsenal’s choice to prioritize Martin Zubimendi in the transfer market.
The club has reportedly set aside £51 million to sign the Spanish midfielder this summer, a move meant to complement Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice while preparing for possible exits of Jorginho and Thomas Partey.
Mikel Arteta acknowledged the importance of squad evolution, stating before Arsenal’s recent 2-2 draw with Aston Villa: “We have contract situations to address. Some deals can be renewed, but we must stay proactive in shaping the squad.”
Despite Arsenal’s long-term planning, Gallas believes the immediate need is in attack, not midfield. He points out that Manchester City has bolstered their frontline with Omar Marmoush, while rivals Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Manchester United are all hunting for offensive reinforcements.
“I don’t understand Arsenal’s move for Zubimendi,” Gallas told Spin Genie. “Midfield isn’t the priority. They need a striker and possibly another center-back. With William Saliba injured, Jurrien Timber is filling in, while Thomas Partey plays right-back. Their transfer strategy confuses me.”
Gallas also questions why Arsenal didn’t pursue Marmoush and suggests Arteta should face tougher scrutiny over his reluctance to sign a striker: “I don’t see journalists asking Arteta about this—maybe they fear being banned from press conferences.”
