Ruben Amorim has seemingly opened the door for Marcus Rashford to salvage his Manchester United career, despite the player’s recent struggles and rumors of a potential move away from Old Trafford.
Since Amorim’s arrival as manager in November, Rashford has found himself out of favor, with the England forward last appearing for United on December 12.
His absence has sparked speculation about his future, with top European clubs like Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, and Tottenham all reportedly interested in securing his services.
Despite Rashford being overlooked for recent matches, including the Europa League clash against Steaua Bucuresti, Amorim’s recent comments indicate that the door isn’t completely closed on the 27-year-old’s career at United.
Speaking after United’s 1-0 win over Fulham, Amorim revealed his high standards, suggesting that he would rather play his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach than any player failing to meet expectations in training.
While these remarks were seen by many as a clear jab at Rashford, the manager clarified that they applied to the entire squad.
Amorim made it clear that the team is stronger with Rashford in the lineup, hinting at the possibility of a future for the forward at the club—if certain conditions are met.
‘The situation is the same for every player,’ Amorim said in his pre-match press conference. ‘My message wasn’t directed only at Marcus. It applies to everyone who isn’t giving 100 percent.’
He continued, ‘We are a better team with Rashford, but until the right moment comes, I won’t change my stance. If he adjusts his approach, we’ll gladly welcome him back. It’s about setting standards, not making it personal.’
While Amorim may have extended a glimmer of hope for Rashford, former United star Rio Ferdinand believes the damage might be irreversible.
Ferdinand argued that the public criticism of Rashford’s application could leave the player with little chance of a comeback.
‘If I were Marcus and heard those words, it would be a blow to my pride and ego,’ Ferdinand said on his Rio Presents YouTube channel. ‘Being questioned about your effort and commitment to the team—those are damning words. It would be hard for him to recover from that.’
‘If Rashford were to return to the team after such remarks, it would send the wrong message to the rest of the squad,’ Ferdinand added. ‘It would suggest that any player can slip up and still find their way back into the team.’
While Amorim may have offered a lifeline, the pressure on Rashford to change his approach and regain his place in the squad is mounting. Whether he will respond to the manager’s challenge and rekindle his career at United remains to be seen.
