Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that James Maddison will be sidelined for two to three weeks due to a calf strain, dealing yet another setback to the squad.
The midfielder missed Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City after experiencing discomfort following the Europa League victory over Hoffenheim. Now, Postecoglou has confirmed that Maddison faces a spell on the sidelines.
“Madders has got a calf strain, he’s probably two or three weeks,” Postecoglou stated in his Wednesday press conference.
Even in a best-case scenario, the England international will miss Tottenham’s upcoming Europa League clash against Elfsborg, a Premier League match against Brentford, and crucial cup ties against Liverpool and Aston Villa.
Maddison’s injury adds to an ongoing fitness crisis for Spurs, with Postecoglou’s squad struggling with absences throughout the season. However, there was some positive news, as Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr, and Yves Bissouma are all fit to play.
“[Van de Ven] is good to go,” said Postecoglou. “Pape still has a slight niggle, but he’s available, and so is Biss.”
On the downside, Cristian Romero remains unavailable, with Postecoglou confirming the center-back will not feature against Elfsborg or Brentford.
“Cuti is still a slow burner. His injury is different, so he’s not in contention for this weekend,” the manager explained.
As Spurs prepare for their final Europa League group-stage game, they sit sixth in the table and must secure a win to guarantee a top-eight finish, which would take them directly into the competition’s last 16.
