Kobbie Mainoo’s standout display in Manchester United’s 2-0 Europa League victory over FCSB was a direct result of Ruben Amorim’s tactical adjustment.
The United boss revealed that Mainoo’s struggles in a defensive midfield role led to his more advanced positioning—a move that paid off handsomely.
United continued their perfect run in European competition under Amorim, securing their fourth straight win and sealing a top-eight finish in their group.
Diogo Dalot broke the deadlock in the second half, finishing a driven cross from Mainoo, who later found the net himself by slotting home Alejandro Garnacho’s delivery.
Typically used in a deeper midfield role within Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, the 19-year-old was instead pushed forward into an attacking midfield position. Bruno Fernandes dropped into central midfield, allowing Mainoo the freedom to operate near the opposition’s box.
Amorim praised the youngster’s performance, acknowledging that the switch allowed him to play without the constant defensive burden.
“Kobbie Mainoo was excellent in that position,” Amorim told TNT Sports. “He had more freedom and didn’t have to focus so much on tracking back.”
The manager later admitted that Mainoo’s difficulties in defensive duties led to the change.
“He was struggling a lot when defending as a midfielder,” Amorim explained in his post-match press conference. “As a No.10, he was free to play near the box. We need time to assess and find the best positions for our players.”
United controlled the game comfortably, dominating possession and limiting their Romanian opponents. Amorim acknowledged that the challenge was different from the Premier League but was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We managed the game well,” he said. “We had more time on the ball, created chances, and kept a clean sheet. We need to be more clinical, but overall, it was a good day.”
Former United academy graduate Robbie Savage was particularly impressed with Mainoo’s display in the attacking role.
“I think his best position is as a No.10,” Savage said on TNT Sports. “He’s not a No.6 in this United team. The question is whether he’s creative enough for a No.10 or defensively strong enough for a No.6. Ideally, he’s a No.8, but given United’s system, he should play further forward. He was brilliant tonight.”
United now shift focus to the Premier League, with just three days to prepare before hosting Crystal Palace on Sunday.
