Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot has embraced the idea of increased competition at left-back as the club edges closer to signing Lecce’s rising star, Patrick Dorgu. Reports suggest a £31.4 million deal has been agreed, making the 20-year-old the first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim.
United had prioritized strengthening the left-back position due to Luke Shaw’s recurring injuries, which have left them vulnerable over the past two seasons. While Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and PSG’s Nuno Mendes were also considered, Dorgu’s potential and suitability for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system put him at the top of the list.
Dalot, originally a right-back, has stepped in on the left side during Shaw’s absence and has proven his versatility. Despite Dorgu’s impending arrival, he remains unfazed, expressing his readiness to help the team in any capacity.
“At this club, competition is a given,” Dalot told The United Stand. “I feel comfortable on both sides, and I’m here to contribute wherever I’m needed. The manager knows the kind of player I am, and I’ll always give my best.”
Dalot recently scored in United’s 2-0 Europa League victory over FCSB, securing a spot in the last 16. With three consecutive wins across all competitions, the team is building momentum ahead of their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
Discussing the adaptation to Amorim’s tactical system, Dalot acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of quick adjustments. “Training within games has been the toughest part,” he admitted. “But at this level, and for a club like United, we have to adapt fast. Winning games makes it easier, and we want to keep that momentum going.”
Dalot is confident Amorim is the right man to restore United to its former glory. “He’s passionate, both as a coach and a former player. That’s exactly what this club needs,” he said. “The fans demand the best, and that’s what he wants as well. To bring United back to where it belongs, we have to embrace that mentality.”
With the transfer deadline approaching, Amorim has openly stated that United are actively working on reinforcements. “The goal is to improve the team,” he told TNT Sports. “But transfers are complex, and sometimes things don’t depend solely on the club or the player. What matters is making the right decisions for the future.”
United fans will be eager to see if Dorgu’s arrival marks the beginning of a new era under Amorim, as the club aims to rebuild and reclaim its place at the top.
