Patrick Dorgu made an emotional farewell to Lecce supporters on Friday night, signaling his imminent transfer to Manchester United.
The young defender is set to become the first signing under new manager Ruben Amorim, following an agreed €35 million (£29.2m) deal between United and Lecce earlier this week.
Although Dorgu was included in Lecce’s squad for their 3-1 triumph over Parma, the 20-year-old remained on the bench throughout the match.
At the final whistle, he approached Lecce’s traveling fans at the Ennio Tardini stadium, acknowledging them with a wave as his teammates embraced him in a heartfelt goodbye.
With his medical scheduled in Manchester on Saturday, Lecce head coach Marco Giampaolo confirmed Dorgu’s impending move.
“I believe Dorgu will be in Manchester tomorrow,” Giampaolo stated. “He’s a fantastic young man who gave his all for us.
At 20, such an opportunity brings a lot of emotions, so I felt it was best for him not to play. If I had needed him, I would have used him, but I decided against it.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United remains active in the transfer market. The club is still pursuing Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel, who recently declined a move to Tottenham but remains open to offers from United or Arsenal.
Additionally, reports from Portugal suggest United has reached an agreement to sign Sporting’s right wing-back Geovany Quenda at the end of the season.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, a deal worth €60 million (£50.1m) is expected to be finalized soon.
