Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, made a powerful statement in their opening match of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, securing a convincing 4-1 win over the Young Football Ferns of New Zealand.

Head coach Bankole Olowookere expressed his gratitude and optimism following the victory, sharing a message on social media: “We kicked off our campaign in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic with an impressive 4-1 win against New Zealand. I’m grateful for your support, Nigerians. Let’s hope for more positive results ahead.”

The Flamingos wasted no time in establishing dominance. Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring just two minutes into the game, setting the tone for Nigeria’s relentless attack. By the 13th minute, Taiwo Adegoke doubled the lead, while Fareedat Abdulwaheeb added a third with a skillful lob in the 28th minute, leaving New Zealand reeling at 3-0 by halftime.

Team captain Taiwo Afolabi extended Nigeria’s lead to 4-0 just ten minutes into the second half. New Zealand’s Hannah Saxon managed to pull one back in the 60th minute, but it was not enough to alter the outcome as Nigeria held firm for a comfortable victory.

The Flamingos will now shift their focus to their second group-stage match against Ecuador on Saturday, hoping to build on their strong start and continue their journey in the tournament with more positive results.
