Chelsea on the Brink of Champions League Comeback with Isak Signing

Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to secure Champions League football next season—provided they sign Newcastle’s Alexander Isak before the transfer deadline.

With the club slipping in form since mid-December, Enzo Maresca’s squad is struggling to maintain a top-four position, winning just once in their last seven league outings.

Currently sixth in the table, one point shy of the top four and trailing Liverpool by 16 points, Chelsea’s title challenge has faded. However, Merson believes that securing Isak—one of the most in-form strikers in the league—could be the game-changer they need.

Despite their usual aggressive spending, Chelsea has been quiet in the January transfer window. While they’ve been linked with Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, no major moves have been finalized. With just days remaining before the transfer deadline, a marquee signing like Isak could shift the momentum.

Isak, who has netted 18 goals in his last 19 appearances, has drawn interest from Arsenal as well. Merson claims the Swedish forward could be the difference-maker in the title race, with Newcastle reportedly valuing him at over £100 million.

“We’re talking about the best centre-forward in the league right now,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “Unlike players who score in bursts, Isak is consistent—he delivers in every single game.”

Merson believes Arsenal’s title hopes would be almost guaranteed with Isak leading their attack. Likewise, if Chelsea were to secure his signature, a top-four finish would be all but certain. However, with Financial Fair Play (FFP) in play, Newcastle’s ability to resist offers remains uncertain.

While Arsenal admires Isak, they’ve also turned their attention to Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. Their initial bid for the England striker was rejected, but they may return with an improved offer.

Merson, however, questioned Arsenal’s approach, suggesting the bid for Watkins was just for show. “They knew they wouldn’t get him for that price—it was more about proving to the fans they’re active in the market,” he said.

Despite Watkins being 29, Merson argues that Arsenal should focus on immediate success rather than long-term planning. “If they sign him, they could win the league this year or next. They shouldn’t worry about where he’ll be in four years.”

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, all eyes will be on Chelsea and Arsenal to see if they make a decisive move for Isak or Watkins—potential signings that could shape the remainder of the Premier League season.
