Carney Chukwuemeka is set to leave Chelsea on loan to Borussia Dortmund, a move that follows his limited appearances at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old midfielder has only played four times this season, and just 32 times in total for Chelsea since his £20 million switch from Aston Villa in 2022.

His lack of regular playing time led to Dortmund’s interest, and many believe he should never have left Villa in the first place.

Tim Sherwood, a Premier League-winning captain, stated that Chukwuemeka made a mistake by moving to Chelsea, stressing the importance of consistent playing time for his development.

Dortmund, a club that has nurtured the careers of English talents like Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho, could offer the opportunity Chukwuemeka needs. Dortmund will pay Chelsea a £2 million loan fee and cover his wages, with a £41.5 million buy option.

Meanwhile, Paul Merson criticized the long-term contracts Chelsea has been offering, suggesting that players are focusing more on financial security than on their careers.
