Denmark manager Brian Riemer has cautioned Patrick Dorgu about the immense pressure that awaits him at Manchester United following his £25m transfer from Lecce. The 20-year-old wing-back, who was United’s only major signing of the winter window, now faces a drastically different level of expectation.
With just 57 senior appearances for Lecce, Dorgu remains relatively inexperienced. However, he is seen as a key piece in new manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, playing at left wing-back. Riemer emphasized that while the move is a great opportunity, the demands at Old Trafford will be unlike anything Dorgu has faced before.
“It’s a huge endorsement of Danish talent development that two of our biggest prospects, Rasmus Højlund and Patrick Dorgu, are now at arguably the world’s biggest club,” Riemer told Tipsbladet.
“But Patrick must understand that expectations and pressure are completely different at Manchester United compared to Lecce. He has discussed this thoroughly with his team, and if he succeeds, the rewards will be immense.”
Dorgu himself acknowledges the mental strength required to thrive at a club of United’s stature. Having lived alone in Italy, he has already developed resilience, which he believes will help him adapt.
“For me, mentality is the most important thing,” Dorgu said. “There’s always a lot of talk around football, and you have to be strong both on and off the pitch to stay focused.
“I’ve heard about the incredible support here, and I’m excited to be part of Manchester United. It’s the biggest club in England, and I believe the system suits me well. I’m eager to work with the new manager and get started.”
As Dorgu steps onto one of football’s grandest stages, all eyes will be on how he handles the pressure and whether he can live up to the expectations at Old Trafford.
