Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal were frustrated by their inability to sign a forward in the transfer window but remains confident in his squad’s attacking depth.
With Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus sidelined, the Gunners were widely expected to strengthen their frontline, with names like Ollie Watkins, Mathys Tel, and Benjamin Sesko linked. Reports also suggested a late push for Alvaro Morata, but no deal materialized.
Addressing the media ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle, Arteta reflected on the club’s transfer activity.
“We had clear objectives in the window to explore ways to improve our squad,” he said. “Injuries have impacted us, and we weren’t able to bring in reinforcements. It’s disappointing, but we are committed to signing only the right players, staying disciplined in our approach.”
Despite missing out on a new striker, Arteta emphasized the need to move forward. “We gave our best effort. Sometimes deals don’t happen, but we learn from the experience and move on.”
With no fresh attacking additions, Arsenal will rely heavily on Kai Havertz in the coming months. The German international, often criticized for his finishing, showcased his value in Arsenal’s dominant 5-1 victory over Manchester City, scoring his 15th goal of the season while also demonstrating his work ethic.
Havertz has been a key figure in Arsenal’s demanding schedule, playing consistently since December. Arteta, however, hinted at tactical adjustments, suggesting that other players might be deployed in a central role.
“We need to be adaptable in attack. Keeping our forwards fit and productive is crucial,” Arteta said. “We have options—Raheem Sterling has played centrally, Ethan Nwaneri could fit in, and Gabriel Martinelli is another possibility. We’ll assess based on circumstances and opponents.”
With Arsenal still fighting on multiple fronts, Arteta must now find solutions within his existing squad to maintain their attacking threat.
