Chelsea are keeping a close watch on Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, but any summer move will come at a hefty price. Reports suggest United will demand at least £80 million if Chelsea reignite their interest in the 18-year-old.
Mainoo, whose current contract runs until 2027 with an option for an extra year, has been attracting attention from Chelsea.
Meanwhile, United’s financial concerns under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) could force them to consider major sales.
In January, United were open to offloading Alejandro Garnacho, with both Chelsea and Napoli in talks for the Argentine winger.
According to The Guardian, United remain open to selling Garnacho this summer if they receive a bid around £70m. Similarly, Mainoo could leave for an offer exceeding £80m.
United’s restricted financial flexibility means significant sales may be necessary to fund new signings for incoming manager Ruben Amorim.
The club’s only major January signing was Patrick Dorgu, a 20-year-old wing-back from Lecce, arriving for €35m (£29.2m). Additionally, they secured 18-year-old defender Ayden Heaven from Arsenal for around £1.5m.
To manage their wage bill, United loaned out Marcus Rashford and Antony.
Aston Villa are covering 75% of Rashford’s £325,000-a-week salary, while Real Betis are paying at least 84% of Antony’s £150,000-a-week wages.
With financial constraints looming, United could be forced into high-profile sales, making Chelsea’s pursuit of Mainoo one to watch this summer.
