Mateo Retegui is making waves in Serie A, and Premier League giants are taking notice. The Atalanta striker has been in electric form, scoring 20 goals in just 22 league appearances, with only 18 of those being starts.
His lethal finishing has now attracted interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, both of whom have reportedly contacted Atalanta over a potential transfer, according to Foot Mercato.
Retegui, 25, arrived in Bergamo last summer from Genoa for €28 million (£23.3m) after a solid, if unspectacular, seven-goal season.
However, his performances have exceeded all expectations, turning him into one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers.
Atalanta, under no pressure to sell given his contract runs until 2028, will demand a hefty fee if clubs come knocking.
The Italian international, who was born and raised in Argentina, first made his mark with a prolific loan spell at Tigre, where he bagged 30 goals in 48 games.
That form earned him a move to Italy, and now, with interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Paris Saint-Germain, another big move could be on the horizon.
Retegui’s stock rose even further last weekend when he scored four goals in Atalanta’s emphatic 5-0 win over Verona. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini praised his goal-scoring exploits but challenged him to be just as effective in tougher matches.
“He’s extraordinary when the team dominates, like today,” Gasperini said. “But there are also games where you have to defend, and there’s room for improvement.”
The in-form striker will look to continue his scoring spree when Atalanta faces Club Brugge in the Champions League knockout play-off on Wednesday, having already netted three times in the group stage.
