Joe Cole has advised Kobbie Mainoo to remain at Manchester United despite growing interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The 19-year-old, a product of United’s academy, has made 60 appearances for the club and was one of their standout performers last season. His impressive form even earned him a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
However, Mainoo has struggled to replicate that impact this season, largely due to Bruno Fernandes occupying his preferred attacking midfield role.

As a result, manager Ruben Amorim has experimented with Mainoo in different positions, including as a playmaker and even a false nine, with mixed success.
Reports suggest United are open to selling Mainoo in the summer, valuing him at around £80m.
Chelsea are among the clubs monitoring the situation, but Cole believes leaving his boyhood club could hinder the youngster’s development.
“At the moment, Mainoo’s best position is where Bruno Fernandes plays, but unfortunately for him, Bruno is the best player at the club and the captain,” Cole told Paddy Power. “Playing multiple positions won’t harm his development it will actually help him grow as a player.”
Despite his talent, financial constraints could force United to offload Mainoo and fellow academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho.
Cole expressed concern over this strategy, noting that clubs are increasingly selling academy players to balance their books.
“United seem to be considering selling Mainoo and Garnacho to comply with financial rules,” Cole continued. “He should stay and fight for his place, especially as a local lad. His versatility will only make him better.”
Paul Scholes also weighed in on Mainoo’s struggles, suggesting United’s tactical uncertainty is affecting his performances.
“I think Mainoo looks lost,” Scholes said. “They don’t seem to know what to do with him, and I don’t think he knows where he fits best.”
Mainoo started in United’s FA Cup win over Leicester but was substituted after an hour, with his side trailing. As United sit 13th in the league, they face another tough challenge when they visit Tottenham on Sunday.
