Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphasized the need for Gabriel Jesus to “earn the right to play more” as the Brazilian seeks to regain his form and find the back of the net for the first time this season. Jesus, who has started just one Premier League match this campaign, has yet to score after making eight appearances across all competitions. Despite showing promise during pre-season with a couple of goals, he has not netted competitively since January in a match against Nottingham Forest.

Arteta noted that Kai Havertz has emerged as a more effective option up front, resulting in Jesus taking on a more limited role lately. However, Arteta remains optimistic about the 27-year-old’s potential. “He came on in great shape, probably in the best condition he’s been with us,” Arteta said. He acknowledged that a groin injury early in the season hindered Jesus’s progress but expressed confidence in his commitment to regain his rhythm. “Now he needs to earn the right to play more. He’s got our full support, he can play in various positions and is a key player for us,” Arteta added.

With Arsenal facing Bournemouth on Saturday, Jesus will be eager for a chance to contribute, particularly as fitness concerns linger around several teammates following the international break. Martin Ødegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury, while Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli are all managing fitness issues but may still participate this weekend.

Arteta provided an update on Saka, stating, “It’s not a serious injury. He’s evolving really well. He was maybe well enough to play in the second England game.” Arteta indicated hopefulness for Saka’s return, depending on his performance in training leading up to the match. Regarding Havertz, Arteta said, “He had a few issues, but we’re dealing with it. He’s been absolutely brilliant.”

On Martinelli, Arteta mentioned, “Gabby only landed yesterday afternoon. He went outside a bit to see how he’s feeling, today he will step up, and we can see.” The manager acknowledged the possibility of taking risks with player fitness, saying, “We have to decide if we want to take a risk because I know he will say he is okay.” Arteta’s comments reflect both the pressure and the support surrounding the squad as they prepare for their upcoming fixture.
