Michael Owen has heavily criticized Manchester United’s center-backs after their lackluster performance in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, claiming they “literally do nothing” to help the team.
James Maddison capitalized on a rebound from Lucas Bergvall’s shot, slotting home the only goal of the game after Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana’s save fell straight to his feet.

Owen was particularly frustrated that none of United’s defenders Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, or Noussair Mazraoui reacted in time to clear the danger.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former England striker didn’t hold back:
“What frustrates me most about Manchester United is that their center-halves do nothing during the game. They hardly pick up any players, yet when you ask them to do one job stop the guy who’s shooting they’re asleep.
“There are three of them standing there doing nothing. They won’t push up, they won’t mark anybody, they just sit back. It’s the easiest position on the pitch in theory because they’re not being asked to do much.
“The midfield is the hardest place to play in this team, but the defense should be the easiest yet they still get it wrong.”
Sunday’s loss was United’s third defeat in four games, leaving them 15th in the Premier League, 12 points above the relegation zone and trailing an Everton side that was recently in the drop battle.

Under-pressure manager Ruben Amorim admitted the struggles were frustrating:
“It’s hard. When we create chances and don’t score, it makes things really difficult. Losing games and players forces us to constantly change our approach. We need to focus on the next game and move forward.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was relieved to see his team bounce back after back-to-back cup defeats:
“It was important to win today and get our league form back on track. We had to do all facets of the game today, and I’m pleased with how the new players contributed. The most important thing was getting the win.”
Manchester United will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against an in-form Everton side, while Tottenham prepares for their next fixture against Ipswich Town.
