Mason Greenwood is reportedly open to switching his national allegiance to Jamaica if he is not selected by England’s new manager, Thomas Tuchel. The 23-year-old forward made headlines after leaving Manchester United this summer for Marseille in a €31.6 million (£26.6m) transfer, where he has enjoyed a strong start to his career.

Background

Greenwood has only one cap for England and has not represented the national team since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling behavior, and assault. All charges against him were dropped in February 2023. After a brief period of consideration for reintegration into Erik ten Hag’s squad, Greenwood was loaned to Getafe last season.

Greenwood’s International Ambitions

Now eager to return to international football, Greenwood seeks discussions with Tuchel and the Football Association (FA) regarding his future with England. However, if opportunities with the national team appear limited, he is prepared to commit to Jamaica, who are managed by former United coach Steve McClaren, in hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

A source close to Greenwood stated:

“Mason knows his chances of playing for England again are very slim. But he wants to check with the FA and Tuchel now he has been appointed to see what they think. He is determined to play at the highest level, and that means the World Cup. So if England don’t want him, he’ll switch to Jamaica and try and get to the 2026 World Cup that way.”

McClaren’s Interest

After taking charge as Jamaica’s new manager in August, McClaren has already had preliminary discussions with Greenwood about a potential national team switch.

“I know the players. I met Mason and we had a little conversation. I want to go and meet everyone when I get back and find out whether they actually want to come here and play for Jamaica. Again, it’s about commitment. I will be making sure that we have a conversation with all the players. We have a list,” McClaren explained.

In a recent statement, England’s interim manager Lee Carsley noted:

“Mason wasn’t a player that we can consider, to be honest, no. I’m aware of how he’s doing, but he wasn’t under consideration.”

As Greenwood weighs his options, the coming months will be pivotal for both his international aspirations and his career trajectory.
