Peter Osaze Odemwingie, former Stoke City and Super Eagles forward, has expressed his support for Augustine Eguavoen to be appointed as the permanent head coach of the Nigerian national football team. Eguavoen took charge in September after negotiations between the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Bruno Labbadia broke down. Since then, Eguavoen has guided the team to two victories and one draw in their bid for AFCON 2025 qualification.
Odemwingie, who worked with Eguavoen during his time at Bendel Insurance, praised the coach’s commitment and passion for the game. He described Eguavoen as a reliable figure who is dedicated to his role, having consistently taken coaching courses and maintained involvement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Odemwingie believes Eguavoen has the ability and passion to continue leading the Super Eagles, whether as a permanent coach or not.
Nigeria currently leads their AFCON qualification group with seven points from three matches, a testament to Eguavoen’s effective leadership.
