Former Super Eagles forward Ben Akwuegbu has backed Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman to succeed at elite European clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. Speaking to softfootball.com, Akwuegbu insisted that Lookman has the talent to shine on a bigger stage.
His comments come amid speculation about Lookman’s future at Atalanta following criticism from manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
After missing a crucial penalty in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League second-leg clash against Club Brugge where Atalanta suffered a 3-1 (5-2 aggregate) defeat Lookman faced a public rebuke.

Gasperini labeled him “one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen,” sparking controversy.
Feeling disrespected, Lookman expressed his disappointment. However, Akwuegbu, nicknamed the ‘Austrian Bomber’ during his playing days, believes the forward should have ignored the remarks and stayed focused on his performance.
“I believe Lookman deserves to be at a bigger club,” Akwuegbu said from London. “A move to Real Madrid, Barcelona, or another top European team would be a great step for him. He has the talent to thrive at that level.”
Akwuegbu also advised Lookman to avoid engaging in disputes with his coach.
“He shouldn’t have responded he’s Africa’s Best Footballer, after all,” Akwuegbu stated. “His priority should be staying disciplined and focused on his game. He’s been fantastic for both club and country, and distractions like this don’t help his career.”
Highlighting Lookman’s achievements, including winning the 2024 African Player of the Year award, Akwuegbu stressed the importance of professionalism.
“This is his club, and the manager is in charge,” he added. “The coach has control over decisions, including his wages. Lookman should avoid conflicts that could impact his future.”
Lookman, now 27, joined Atalanta in 2022 and previously played for Charlton Athletic, Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester City.
