Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell was offered to Borussia Dortmund during the summer transfer window, but the German club declined the opportunity to sign the 27-year-old left-back. Chilwell has fallen out of favor at Chelsea, with manager Enzo Maresca and club officials encouraging him to explore new opportunities ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Despite featuring in Chelsea’s recent Carabao Cup victory over Barrow, Chilwell has been limited in first-team appearances and is reportedly seeking regular playing time elsewhere. As part of Chelsea’s “bomb squad” — a group of players expected to be moved on — Chilwell, along with Raheem Sterling, Trevoh Chalobah, and others, was considered for transfer.

Dortmund briefly discussed the prospect of signing Chilwell but ultimately decided against making a move before the deadline. With Ramy Bensebaini securing the left-back position at Dortmund, and Julian Ryerson as a backup option, Dortmund felt they had enough cover in that area for now.

Reports suggest that a January transfer remains a likely outcome for Chilwell, as Chelsea may continue seeking to offload him. Dortmund hasn’t ruled out revisiting their left-back options in the winter window, and Premier League clubs such as Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Ipswich have also expressed interest in the Englishman.

Chilwell, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2020 for £50 million, has 107 appearances for the club. Despite his contributions, including being a part of Thomas Tuchel’s Champions League-winning squad in 2021, Chilwell’s future at Stamford Bridge looks uncertain.
