Antony’s loan spell at Real Betis has been off to a flying start, but the Manchester United winger found himself in hot water after receiving a straight red card for a reckless challenge in Betis’ dramatic 2-1 victory over Getafe.

The Brazilian was instrumental in Betis’ first goal, weaving past defenders from deep inside his own half before delivering a perfect assist to Isco.

The former Real Madrid star later doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 77th minute, putting the visitors in control.

However, the game took a chaotic turn in stoppage time. Getafe’s Borja Mayoral pulled one back, sparking late drama, and moments later, Domingos Duarte was dismissed for a second yellow card. Antony soon followed, lunging at Juan Iglesias from behind long after the ball was played.

The winger barely protested his dismissal, giving referee Javier Alberola Rojas a sheepish look and even offering a thumbs-up as he walked off the pitch.

His red card means he will miss Betis’ crucial upcoming fixture against reigning champions Real Madrid.

Despite the setback, Antony has made a strong impact since arriving in Spain, notching two goals and two assists in four La Liga matches, along with a stunning long-range strike in Betis’ 3-0 Europa Conference League win over Gent.

Betis’ latest victory pushes them up the table, level on points with sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano. Speaking ahead of the match, Antony expressed his joy at rediscovering his form and happiness in Spain.

“The most important thing is that I have found myself again,” Antony said. “I am happy to be enjoying myself every day.

Things go well when we are well, happy, and content. In four games, I have scored three goals and provided an assist. I expected it, and I didn’t expect it.”

He credited his mental and physical preparation for his resurgence, acknowledging that despite limited playing time in Manchester, he worked hard to stay ready for his next opportunity.

“I wasn’t playing much, but I kept working. I needed to feel happy again. That’s the most important thing,” he added. “I’ve had a great time in Manchester too, won two titles, and I’m grateful.

But here, I’ve found myself again. The people, the weather, everything makes me happy. I wake up every day with a smile, and that’s what matters.”

While his reckless tackle stole the headlines, Antony’s resurgence at Betis continues to be one of La Liga’s most intriguing storylines this season.
