Philippe Clement’s tenure as Rangers manager came to an abrupt end after a 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren, marking the club’s fifth Scottish Premiership loss this season. His 16-month spell in charge saw just one piece of silverware—the Scottish League Cup—before the club decided to part ways. With Rangers now trailing Celtic by 13 points, drastic changes were deemed necessary.

In the wake of Clement’s dismissal, club legend Barry Ferguson was appointed interim manager until the end of the season. His first challenge comes on Wednesday night against Kilmarnock. Rangers confirmed in a statement that their football review remains ongoing and a permanent appointment will be made in the coming months.

Joe Cole’s Case for Ashley Cole as Rangers Manager

Former Chelsea and England winger Joe Cole has put forward Ashley Cole as a potential candidate for the permanent role at Rangers. Speaking on The Dressing Room Podcast, Joe Cole highlighted Ashley’s dedication to coaching and his potential to thrive in the role.

“Where do they go, Rangers? I’m going to throw a name in there—he’s our guy, Ashley Cole,” he stated. “He’s got a great job with the England U21s, but Rangers had success with Steven Gerrard—another ex-England legend. I can see Ashley stepping into that role.”

Joe Cole further illustrated Ashley’s commitment to coaching by recalling a moment during a media trip. While relaxing in the sun, Ashley pulled out his laptop to study throw-ins, emphasizing his meticulous approach to the game.

Despite not yet securing a full-time managerial role, many believe his tactical knowledge and elite playing career set him up for success.

Ex-England full-back Wayne Bridge echoed these sentiments, insisting that someone must eventually give Ashley a chance in management. “He was one of the best players, but more than that, he understands football. He always read the game well, and I believe he would improve any team,” Bridge said.

Barry Ferguson’s Focus on the Present

While speculation continues over who will take over long-term, Barry Ferguson remains focused on his interim responsibilities. In his first press conference, he stressed the importance of Rangers bouncing back against Kilmarnock and refused to entertain thoughts about his own long-term future at the club.

“My only concern is Wednesday night’s game at Kilmarnock,” he said. “I’m here until the end of the season, and I’m going to give everything to get results for this football club.”

When asked if he would consider taking the job permanently, Ferguson avoided committing, saying, “I’ve not even thought about that. My mindset is to take things one game at a time and do my best to turn things around.”

What’s Next for Rangers?

With high-profile names like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and David Wagner being linked to the role, Rangers will have several options to consider.

Whether Ashley Cole emerges as a genuine contender remains to be seen, but Joe Cole’s endorsement has sparked intrigue.

For now, Ferguson has the task of steadying the ship, but all eyes will be on Rangers’ long-term decision as they aim to close the gap on Celtic and reclaim domestic dominance.
