Algerian-born Adel Amrouche has been named the new head coach of Rwanda’s senior men’s national team, just weeks before a high-stakes World Cup qualifier against Nigeria. The Rwanda Football Association (RFA) confirmed his appointment via their official X handle on Sunday.

Amrouche, 56, replaces German coach Torsten Spittler and steps in at a critical moment, with his first major test coming on March 17, 2025. He will lead Rwanda against the Super Eagles in a crucial Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to take place in Kigali.

Rwanda currently sits at the top of Group C with seven points, holding a four-point lead over Nigeria. A victory could significantly boost their chances of securing a spot in the World Cup.

Amrouche began his coaching journey in 1988, managing the youth team of OMR El Annasser while still playing for the senior squad. Over the years, he built an impressive coaching résumé, and in March 2023, he took charge of the Tanzania national team. Under his leadership, Tanzania qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

However, his time with Tanzania ended in controversy. In January 2024, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) suspended him after he received an eight-match ban and a $10,000 fine from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The punishment came after he accused Morocco of influencing CAF decisions regarding match scheduling and officiating.

Now, as he takes over Rwanda’s national team, all eyes will be on him to see if he can maintain their momentum in the World Cup qualifiers. His immediate challenge? Overcoming Nigeria in what promises to be a thrilling showdown.
