Arsenal has intensified its search for a new sporting director following Edu’s unexpected departure, with former Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta emerging as the leading candidate. Arsenal’s interest in Berta could also reignite links to Matheus Cunha.
Edu’s exit last November left the Gunners in a tough spot, especially after a lackluster January transfer window that saw no reinforcements arrive. With the club still competing for silverware, Arsenal is eager to finalize a replacement by the end of March.
Berta, who left Atletico Madrid in January after 12 years, is reportedly keen on a Premier League role and has been preparing for the switch by studying English. During his tenure at Atletico, he oversaw 52 signings totaling €828 million (£684m), bringing in stars like Jan Oblak, Antoine Griezmann, and Rodri.

However, not all of Berta’s moves were successful. His record includes high-profile missteps like Joao Félix’s £113 million transfer, which never quite clicked, and Thomas Lemar’s underwhelming spell at the club.
