Real Sociedad boss dismisses Man Utd struggles

Imanol Alguacil

Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil has played down Manchester United’s struggles ahead of their Europa League clash, dismissing any notion that his side are favorites. He emphasized that despite United’s poor domestic form, they remain a top European team with world-class players.

The first leg of the last 16 tie takes place in Spain on Thursday night before the return leg at Old Trafford next week. Sociedad come into the match on the back of consecutive defeats against Real Madrid and Barcelona, leaving them ninth in La Liga.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have endured a miserable season, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League. Their last match ended in a penalty shootout loss to Fulham in the FA Cup. Despite this, Alguacil insists that his side cannot be considered favorites against such an experienced and talented opponent.

Speaking at a press conference, Alguacil acknowledged the Red Devils’ difficulties but praised their squad and manager. He highlighted their strengths and warned that his team would need to give everything to compete against a club with such a rich history and strong individuals.

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt admitted that the team has not been good enough but rejected the idea of a full-blown crisis. He acknowledged the high expectations at the club and the need for improvement, suggesting that some misfortune has played a role in their struggles.

With little hope in the Premier League and both domestic cup exits, the Europa League now represents United’s best chance at silverware this season. Manager Ruben Amorim recognizes the significance of the competition but insists that long-term rebuilding is more critical than immediate success.

Amorim admitted that winning the Europa League would change perceptions about his tenure at the club. However, he emphasized that Manchester United’s ability to attract top talent does not depend solely on Champions League qualification, as the club remains one of the biggest in world football.

As the two teams prepare for battle, Sociedad aim to capitalize on United’s struggles, while the Red Devils hope to salvage their season with a deep run in Europe. The outcome of this tie could significantly shape the narrative around Amorim’s future and United’s ongoing rebuild.
