Tottenham’s Europa League campaign took a hit as Dominic Solanke’s return from injury ended prematurely in their 1-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar. The striker, sidelined since January with a knee issue, was introduced in the 72nd minute but lasted just 20 minutes before limping off after a collision with AZ goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
Solanke’s injury appeared to be an impact knock to his lower back or hip, raising concerns over a potential setback. Despite initial hopes that he could continue, the discomfort proved too much, and he was replaced by Dane Scarlett in stoppage time. Manager Ange Postecoglou remained optimistic, suggesting it was only a knock, but Spurs now face an anxious wait for further assessment.
The night started poorly for Tottenham when Lucas Bergvall’s unfortunate own goal in the 18th minute handed AZ the lead. The midfielder’s sliced clearance found the back of his own net, and Spurs failed to mount a comeback, struggling to create clear-cut chances throughout the match.

Captain Son Heung-min did not hide his frustration, calling the performance unacceptable and a wake-up call for the squad. He stressed the need for a much-improved display in the second leg, acknowledging that Tottenham’s sloppiness and lack of intensity had cost them.
Postecoglou echoed Son’s concerns, admitting Spurs never got to grips with the game. He acknowledged the poor performance but remained hopeful of a turnaround in the second leg, emphasizing the team’s ability to score and dominate at home.
With the return fixture in north London, Tottenham still have a chance to progress if they can deliver a stronger attacking performance. Postecoglou is confident his side will improve, knowing they must be sharper in possession and more clinical in front of goal.

The added worry for Spurs is Solanke’s fitness, with his availability now uncertain ahead of a crucial stretch of games. Having just returned from injury, another spell on the sidelines would be a major blow for both the player and the team’s attacking options.
Tottenham must regroup quickly, as the second leg presents a decisive moment in their European campaign. With their home crowd behind them, Spurs have the opportunity to put their first-leg disappointment behind them, but a much-improved display will be required.
