Rio Ferdinand has urged Arsenal and Manchester United to avoid signing Viktor Gyokeres, arguing that the Swedish striker would struggle in the Premier League. Despite Gyokeres’ outstanding goal-scoring record for Sporting Lisbon, Ferdinand is not convinced he can replicate that success in England.
The 26-year-old has netted an incredible 82 goals in 90 games for Sporting, making him one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. His performances have attracted interest from top clubs, with Manchester United and Arsenal both reportedly considering a move for him this summer.
United, under new boss Ruben Amorim, are expected to sign a striker after spending heavily on Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee without much return. Meanwhile, Arsenal are also seeking attacking reinforcements after failing to sign a striker in January, a decision that has arguably cost them in the title race.

However, Ferdinand remains skeptical about Gyokeres’ ability to succeed in the Premier League. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he admitted watching the striker closely and concluded that his strengths may not translate well to English football. Ferdinand believes Gyokeres’ physicality would not be enough to make an impact against Premier League defenders.
Joleon Lescott echoed Ferdinand’s concerns, comparing Gyokeres to Timo Werner, who struggled with the physical demands of the English game. Lescott suggested that while Gyokeres is an exciting player, he may not be the right fit for Arsenal or United.
Arsenal’s main striker target is reportedly Alexander Isak, but Newcastle United are expected to demand over £120m for the Swedish forward. Ferdinand doubts Arsenal can afford Isak and warns they may need to look elsewhere for a top-quality No. 9.

Despite his concerns about Gyokeres, Ferdinand acknowledges Arsenal’s urgent need for a clinical finisher. With their current attacking options failing to deliver consistently, securing the right striker will be crucial for Mikel Arteta’s ambitions next season.
As both Arsenal and United weigh up their summer transfer plans, Ferdinand’s doubts raise an important question: will Gyokeres be the right fit, or should they focus on more proven Premier League strikers?
